One has to remember that the literature for the DASH diet, as well as for
just about every single antihypertensive drug on the market, specifically
states that it is intended for mild to moderate hypertension. Anything more
than that isn't likely to respond sufficiently to any single drug or diet,
except perhaps for a few weeks, if at all. When you get past the moderate
range of HTN, then the benefits of treatment become more apparent. At that
point, we aren't just talking about stroke or heart attack anymore, but also
other end-organ damage such as to the eyes and kidneys, and the odds are
less and less in the patient's favour, and the time-frame these things can
occur in becomes shorter and shorter. I do think the benefits of
antihypertensives are debatable, but only when dealing with mild to moderate
hypertension.
