In Reply to: Anyone try the DASH Diet for high blood pressure? posted by elizabeth
I had stage one last year, and it can still go up a little if I get
stressed, or start eating out of control. I monitor it at home.
The DASH diet enabled me to get off the rather nasty medication I was
taking. I keep the prescription handy in case it goes up and stays up, but,
so far, it hasn't done that.
Getting weight off helps a LOT.
What makes me mad about my own situation, and you might have found this too:
my dr just prescribed medication, without looking at my diet or my lifestyle
or even TRYING to find a reason...he just treated the symptom! The more I
read, the more I see that Stage one is more properly treated with lifestyle
changes!
Anyway, I have posted on this newsgroup before to recommend the DASH...make
your dr aware of what you want to do, since it can be dangerous to just go
off your medication, if you are taking it, and, of course, if your HPB is
due to something like clogged arteries or something else, you need to know
about that.
It's too bad that dr's typically just treat this symptom without looking for
the underlying cause! It's like giving you pain pills for a broken leg
without bothering to set the bone!
