Actually, the smooth muscle in arterial walls uses calcium to contract,
and then magnesium is required for the muscle to relax. So high levels of
calcium in proportion to magnesium can also cause high blood pressure (as
well as numerous other health problems, including all kinds of muscle
spasms). It's not surprising the high blood pressure is epedemic, given
that about 80% of the U.S. population is low in magnesium (according to
Science News).
