I have had chronic hypertension for about 5 years now (Diagnosed with it
when I was 22). When I told my doc that I was thinking of getting pregnant,
he switched my medication to Aldomet (also called Methyldopa). I was told
by several different physicians throughout the years that this is the
medication they choose to give to pregnant women because it has been around
a long time and there is very little risk associated with it and pregnant
women. I researched it myself in many medical books and on the net and
found the same conclusions. The downside of Aldomet is that it may have
more annoying side affects than the newer medications. The only side affect
I had was tiredness for about two weeks after I switched.
I took this medication throughout my pregnancy and while breastfeeding
(Pediatrician and Ob all said it was ok while bfing). My son is now almost
five months old and very healthy.
I truly do not believe that weaning your baby is your only option. Although
I would not let your bp go untreated either.
