Breast-Feeding and Hypertension - Labetalol and other approved medications

Posted by Susan Hochtman

I just found out that I have very high (190/112) blood
pressure. My baby is 4 1/2 months old, and is exclusively
breast-fed. My doctor said that he knew of no meds I can
take for the BP that are compatible with bfing, and that I
should just wean her. I refused.

After a few days of research, I found out the names of some
meds that are approved by the AAPA for nursing moms, and I
am trying one of them (Labetalol), and it is not working. I
am going back to the doc tomorrow to try another medication,
but has anyone on this group had this problem, and treated
it successfully while continuing to breast-feed? If so,
what were you on?

If anyone has any info, I would really appreciate it. I am
understandably in a panic right now. My daughter loves to
breast-feed so much (and I love it, too), that I can't bear
to take it away from her. However, I would prefer to live
to see her grow up, as well. What a choice! Please help!
